Mechanical Design Engineer

About the Role

Soundline Marine Systems builds winches, davits, and propulsion hardware that work for years in salt spray and heavy seas. As one of six design engineers, you will own components from SolidWorks model to finished weldment, with the shop floor 30 feet from your desk. If you like seeing your parts get built the same week you release them, this is that job.

What You'll Do

• Design winches, davits, and deck hardware in SolidWorks using sheet metal and weldment tools
• Run FEA sanity checks on load-bearing frames, drums, and lifting points before release
• Release drawings with GD&T and weld callouts that fabricators can build without guesswork
• Walk to the shop floor daily to review first articles, answer fab questions, and adjust designs
• Select bearings, wire rope, hydraulic motors, and fasteners rated for marine duty
• Manage ECOs and keep BOMs and revisions accurate in the PDM system
• Support quoting with weight estimates, material takeoffs, and design-hour estimates

What You'll Bring

• 3-6 years designing fabricated steel or aluminum machinery, ideally load-bearing equipment
• Strong SolidWorks skills, including sheet metal, weldments, and drawing packages
• Working knowledge of FEA for static loading, with judgment on when hand calcs are enough
• Comfort reading and applying weld symbols, GD&T, and structural tolerances
• Experience working directly with welders and machinists during fabrication
• Understanding of corrosion protection for marine or outdoor environments
• Ability to be on-site in Seattle five days a week

Nice to Have

• Experience with winches, cranes, davits, or other lifting equipment
• Familiarity with ABS, DNV, or similar marine classification rules
• Hydraulic or electric drive system sizing experience
• Exposure to SolidWorks PDM or a similar data management system
